A Guy’s Guide to Picking a Hairstylist

Guy getting a haircutSome men pick a hairstylist or a barber at random. Many go to the same people who cut their father’s hair or go to the salon that’s nearest to their home or workplace. But even though men may not think their hair needs as much care and attention as a woman’s, they still need to carefully select a hairstylist. This is because not all stylists are the same—some may be more comfortable or experienced at styling men’s hair than others. Others may simply be too expensive or not as professional as they should be. Here are a few tips for men who need to find a new hairstylist.

• Ask around. If you know someone who has a style you really like, ask where they have their hair cut. Many people are more than happy to refer people to their stylist.

• Before you make an appointment, drive by the salon. You might even park and take a look through the windows while you walk by. Do you like what you see? Do the clients going in and out have hair styles you like? Are they similar to you—are they the same age, dressed similarly, etc.?

• Does the salon look like a place you’d be comfortable spending an hour or so in? If not, you may want to look somewhere else.

• If you’re not certain, go in for a trim. Use this quick maintenance cut as a way of judging how you like the stylist and the salon. If you don’t like it, you’ll be glad you didn’t waste your time or more money there. If you do, you’ll be able to immediately make your next appointment.

• Do you know what you want? If you talk to the stylist (either while getting a trim or when asking about making an appointment), does he or she understand what you’re talking about? If the stylist looks lost or doesn’t seem to really care about the conversation, you should probably find a different place.
