Back Rub Verses Massage

Some people think of back rubs and massages as the same thing, while to others, they’re very different. There are a number of different ways you can separate the two. For some, a back rub is something their significant other gives them, while a massage is what they get at a day spa. For others, a back rub is gentle, while a massage is much deeper.

Anyone can give a back rub. All you have to do is gently rub up and down someone’s back in broad, sweeping strokes or circular motions. Parents often give their children back rubs because they’re relaxing. It can help soothe a crying baby or help a child in pain get to sleep. As adults, a nice back rub can help us relax or feel closer to someone else.

Massages, though, usually involve kneading the muscles. While giving a back rub usually only involves the palm of the hand, a massage can involve using the fingers, knuckles, and elbows. You may even have someone walk on your back! Massaging also involves understanding where the muscles are and how they work together. It can be easier to hurt someone when giving them a massage if you don’t know where to press down.

However, while back rubs can feel good, a massage can be therapeutic. Many people who are very active or do a lot of lifting and walking will get a massage to help their muscles relax. Professional athletes get massages on a regular basis because they put their muscles through a lot. Dancers, too, often get leg and foot massages. A good massage can also be part of physical therapy. People who have knotted up muscles due to an accident or other medical issue can greatly benefit from a massage.

Which do you prefer? A good back rub or a good massage? Or both?
