Caring for Your Hair

Caring for your hair is somewhat more complicated than you might think. Some people say all you really need to do is wash it every day with shampoo, but that’s not true. In fact, hairstylists often say that washing your hair every day can actually be bad for it. Here are some quick hair care tips that can help you keep your hair looking amazing.

Different types of hair need different types of care. Hair that’s really dry may not need to be washed as often. In fact, some people should really only wash their hair about once a week. For others, it’s every other day. Some people do actually wash their hair daily, and that can be fine if their hair type supports it.

Remember to keep the water warm. Washing your hair in hot or cold water can damage it.

When washing your hair, don’t scratch at the roots. Gently rub your scalp with your fingertips instead. Also be sure that you wash out all of the shampoo and conditioner. Otherwise, you may clog up the pores, and that can lead to a lack of hair growth.

Remember to use conditioner only on the hair itself—keep it away from the scalp because it can easily clog up hair follicles. Work in into the hair from the roots out, making sure to rinse all of the conditioner out.

Always comb your hair out first before you brush it, especially after getting out of the shower. Hair is weak when it’s wet, so you have to be careful not to damage it. A brush, especially if your hair is slightly tangled, can yank it out by the roots. Comb it first with a wide tooth comb, and be careful you don’t pull too hard on any tangles.

If at all possible, let your hair air dry. Blow drying it can damage the hair, especially if you use a high heat setting.
