Getting a Trigger Point Massage

If you want to go to a day spa for a relaxing massage, you want to get a Swedish massage. This involves massaging and relaxing the entire body. But if you have a specific area of your body that’s in pain, a Swedish massage will help, but it won’t help as much as a trigger point massage. That’s because this is a form of massage therapy designed to focus solely on the muscles that are knotted up or otherwise causing pain. The goal isn’t to relax you but to release the tension and pressure on muscles that are inflamed or knotted up.

A trigger point is considered to be any tight area located in a muscle. When it’s touched, it triggers pain throughout the area or even in other parts of the body. Pain in one area isn’t always caused by the muscles around it. For example, it’s possible that massaging a trigger point in your back might relieve neck pain. Pain can even radiate throughout the body. That pain in your head may be caused by a pain in your neck which, in turn, could be triggered by a knotted muscle in your back.

To perform this kind of massage, your therapist will mainly focus on discovering where the trigger point is and then working on just that area. Trigger point massages may hurt a little more than other types of massages, and they’re usually not very relaxing. However, once it’s done, the muscle that was causing all of your pain will be more relaxed, and the pain will be greatly reduced or even eliminated completely.

A trigger point massage is similar to a deep tissue massage, but deep tissue massages generally use traditional techniques to work on the entire body, while trigger points focus on only one area and may make use of different tools instead of just the masseuse’s hands.
