How a Spa Facial Works

Woman getting a facialHave you ever wondered how a facial works? If you’ve never gone to a day spa to have one, you may not understand exactly how putting gunk on your face can help clean, exfoliate, and even nourish the skin. But it can do all three of these things. Facials are very popular—they’re the second most requested thing at a spa (massage is the first). If you’re thinking about getting a facial, here’s a basic breakdown of the process:

In some spas, you simply pick the facial you want. While that’s okay, it may not always mean you’re getting the best treatment possible. In an upscale spa, you’ll talk to a professional about your skin and answer some basic questions about your diet, skin care routine, etc. This will help them determine your skin care needs. Some facials help with certain things more than others, so it’s important you get the one that best fits your needs.

Next, the attendant will clean your face with a cotton pad or special wipe. This helps remove the upper layer of dust and dirt so the facial mask itself doesn’t have to deal with the light stuff.

You’ll then have a warm jet of steam directed at your face. This helps the face relax and open up the pores. It can also help soften whiteheads and blackheads, which helps get rid of them.

The attendant will next exfoliate your skin. This is done using either a gritty exfoliant rubbed on the skin, or it may be done using a chemical exfoliate that’s included in the steam.

Next comes the part of the facial that most people are familiar with: the facial mask. The type of mask used is often determined by the type of skin you have—the best mask for someone with dry skin won’t be the best for a person with oily skin, so it’s very important for the attendant to determine which is best for you.

Finally, after the mask is washed off, the attendant will apply moisturizer to your face.
