How Much is Too Much to Pay Your Hairstylist?
2/13/2015

You may have lived this scenario: you’ve made an appointment with a new hairstylist, and you’ve just had a pretty good time. Your hair looks really good, the wash and shampoo felt really nice, and you’ve had a fun time chatting with the stylist. Now it’s time to pay and possibly book your next appointment. You’re all set to do so until the stylist tells you what you owe, and it’s much more than you were expecting.

Many salons will state their prices upfront, but at some, the prices are set by the stylists themselves. They actually only rent space from the salon—they’re not employees, and the stylists don’t have to all have the same set prices. This means that even if you go to a different stylist at the same salon, you may pay a different amount.

Of course, you can’t expect to pay the same price for different services. Men often find that their haircuts aren’t as expensive because they don’t take as much time. They usually simply want a trim, not a completely different style, so there’s not as much for a stylist to do. This means they either get a little bit of a break between appointments or they’re able to schedule more customers in a day.

Both men and women should expect to pay more if they want their hair dyed. This process takes longer and requires more work on the part of the stylist. You should expect to pay twice as much as you would for a simple cut. Remember, it’s not just the stylist’s time—you have to pay for the dye, too. If you want a two-color dye or a look that requires more time, expect to pay even more.

So what’s too much to pay a hairstylist? It really depends on how happy you are with your overall look. If you absolutely love it and realize that it took a good amount of work, you might find that it’s certainly worth paying more for.
