Mobile Apps for Stylists and Salon Owners
3/26/2015

Before everything moved online, salon owners and hairstylists used to have date books, daily planners, and old-style credit card machines in order to do their business. But today, everything can be done with a few apps on your smartphone. If you’re ready to enter the digital age but aren’t sure exactly what you need, here are a two apps that are seen as must-haves.

A type of credit card app and reader – there are a number of apps that will do this, but Square is one of the most popular. You can order the device for free. Then all you need to do is register and download the app (also free). Just plug the card reader into the headphone jack on your smartphone, open the app, and swipe a credit or debit card. Your payments go directly to the bank account you registered. Square does charge you a small fee per transaction, of course, but it’s nothing that you wouldn’t pay by using a larger credit card machine. PayPal also has an app that many people like to use.

A scheduling app – again, there are a number of different apps that will do this, and many of them will connect to your website. StyleSeat is one that was specially created for the salon industry. You can set your schedule to be searchable online. This way, those looking for an appointment can see exactly when you’re available. You can even notify people when you have a last-minute cancellation. It’s a great way of filling those unexpectedly empty hours. You can also have the app text or email people an appointment reminder a day or two before they’re scheduled to help cut back on missed appointments. SetMore, another app, can also send out reminders and share your schedule with others.
