Skin Care Tips for Those with Rosacea
2/25/2015

Rosacea is a chronic facial disorder in which the cheeks, chin, nose, and forehead become bright red. Sometimes it even moves down the neck onto the chest. This condition may come and go over the years, although the redness often becomes more persistent and turns darker as you age. Often, small bumps appear on the skin, especially if the condition isn’t treated. If you have rosacea, you have to be very careful how you treat the skin on your face because it’s very easy to make it worse.

First, you need to know what causes your rosacea to flare up. These triggers can be anything from stress to eating certain foods. When using new makeup, cleansers, and other products that go on your face, you may have to resort to trial and error. Try a little bit of the product on a small patch of skin for a week or two. If it doesn’t seem to cause any burning, itching, redness, or other irritation, it’s probably fine to use.

Second, don’t use anything on your face that will dry out your skin. This includes things like alcohol wipes, peppermint, menthol, witch hazel, and products with added fragrances. Dry skin will only make your rosacea worse.

Third, look at the labels on products and try to avoid those that have many different ingredients. The more things in a product, the more likely it is that one of them will cause irritation. Try to only use products that use simple, mild ingredients. If you go to a day spa, ask to see what products are going to be used on your face before they’re used.

Fourth, always use sunscreen. Bright sunlight is one of the most common rosacea triggers, and getting a sunburn can make the condition incredibly painful. However, you have to be careful about which sunscreen you use because many of them can trigger a rosacea outbreak. There are some specific sunscreens made for those with sensitive skin, so look for them. Also look for the ingredient niacinamide, because it can help reduce redness.
