The Trick to Getting a Great Hair Wash
3/21/2015

Are you tired of your hair looking dull, lifeless, or just plain bad? It may not be your hair at all. If you go to a hairstylist and leave with great hair but can’t seem to recreate it at home, it may be the products you’re using or the technique. If you’ve tried different products, even ones your hairstylist has recommended, and still have hair that doesn’t look as great as you’d like, you may need to try washing your hair differently. Here are a few things to try to improve how your hair looks.

Before you wash your hair, brush it out. Get all of the tangles out of it, but do so carefully—don’t yank on tangles in your hair! Carefully work the knot out or, if you can’t, carefully cut it out. If your hair is fairly tangled, start with a wide tooth comb first, then use a fine tooth one.

When you begin washing your hair, use warm water. Make sure the temperature is comfortable for you; don’t go too hot or too cold. However, at the end of the wash, consider turning the temperature down and finish with a cold wash. The warm water will have opened up your hair follicles, while the cold water closes them. This is especially good if you’re coloring your hair at home—the cold wash will lock in the color better.

While you’re washing your hair, consider giving yourself a little bit of a head massage. Massage your head starting at the hairline and working your way down to the bottom of the neck. This will help you relieve some tension, work shampoo into your hair, and can stimulate the blood flow to the scalp. That will help promote the growth of new hair.
