Things your Hairstylist Wants you to Know
1/8/2015

Being a hairstylist isn’t easy. Sure, it looks like all you have to do is cut someone’s hair, right? But if you’ve been to a stylist, you know it’s much more than that. There’s a lot that goes into doing someone’s hair, especially if you’re not just cutting it but styling, coloring, or highlighting it. Customers who don’t really understand how stylists work or how to take care of their hair can make a stylist’s job that much more difficult. Here are a few things your hairstylist would be thrilled for you to know.

You need to keep your hair trimmed. People who want long, gorgeous hair often think that means they stop getting haircuts. However, this causes their hair to develop split ends, which eventually kills that hair strand and leaves their hair looking thinner. A maintenance trim every couple of months helps remove these split ends. Often, all it means is having half of an inch trimmed off, and your hair will actually grow more quickly after this trim.

Your hair won’t ever look exactly like someone else’s. While everyone may have wanted the Rachel haircut when Friends was popular, no one had hair exactly like Jennifer Anniston’s. Everyone’s hair is slightly different, from the color to the cells making up each hair follicle to the way it lays on your head. No matter how amazing a stylist is, there’s no way to perfectly reproduce someone’s look. But hairstylists will do everything they can to give you a look that is very, very similar and that you like.

Finally, hairstylists really wish their customers knew how much they hate having customers who hate their hair. Many stylists would much rather spend their time redoing a customer’s hair for free than to have that customer leave unhappy. For a stylist, their customers’ hair is like a billboard—it advertises how good they are at their job, and they want to be known for providing amazing styles.
