What is a Hot Stone Massage?

A lot of people have heard about a hot stone massage, but how many people have actually had one? This type of massage is more than just the standard rubbing and kneading of the back and other areas of the body. Instead, it makes use of heated basalt stones. Basalt retains heat, which is why it’s used. These stones are very smooth and not that heavy at all, so the pressure placed on a person’s back isn’t uncomfortable or overwhelming.

Before the stones are applied, the masseuse gives the person a massage to warm up the muscles and release any pent up stress. Then they place the hot stones on specific parts of the body, including certain pressure points, along the spine, and even on the hands or the toes. They may also oil the stones and actually rub them along the body. These stones are warm, but they’re not hot—there’s no need to fear getting burned.

The heat helps the muscles further relax and lets the masseuse get down into the tissue’s deeper layers where knots that cannot otherwise be worked out my lie. When the stones start to cool, the masseuse replaces them with fresh stones.

There are a few reasons why someone might want to get a hot stone massage. The main purpose, of course, is to help the muscles relax and to reduce stress. But a hot stone massage can also help improve circulation, reduce pain, help with depression and anxiety, and may even help reduce the effects of insomnia.

Before getting a hot stone massage, be sure to inform your masseuse of any medical conditions or injuries you may have had. Some conditions can be made worse from the heat. Also always tell the masseuse if the stones are too hot or if they’re too heavy.
