Why Are Cucumbers Put on Your Eyes at a Spa?

In a TV show or movie, you know a character is at a day spa if they have cucumbers on their eyes. We’ve come to associate this vegetable with spas and being pampered, but does it really do any good? Why should you put a cucumber on your face?

If you look at the ingredients in a variety of different skin care products, you’ll see that many of them contain cucumber. This is because cucumbers contain a number of different things that help revitalize and invigorate the skin. They have the ability to help lighten the skin that they’re placed on, which is why cucumbers are often put on the eyes—they help diminish or completely remove those dark circles that appear under the eyes if you don’t get enough rest. This helps make you look healthier and younger.

Cucumbers contain caffeic and ascorbic acids, which may sound like something you wouldn’t want on your skin. However, these acids are not harmful at all—in fact, they actually help reduce the amount of water that the area around the eyes retains. This helps decrease the puffiness of your eyes. Cucumbers are high in antioxidants and silica, both things that help reduce the signs of aging. They also help moisturize your face since they’re mostly water.

You’ll find cucumbers are a major ingredient in most anti-wrinkle creams. That’s because they contain a huge amount of potassium and vitamin E. Both of these nutrients reduce the appearance of fine lines and can make you look younger.

But cucumbers can be used for other things as well. Have a sunburn? Treat the burned area by directly rubbing a slice of freshly cut cucumber over it. This will cool the burn. Plus, after you use a few of your cucumber skins on your face, you can eat the rest. Cucumbers are full of vitamins and nutrients that the body craves!
