Allergies and Your Hair Care Products

Did you know that you can be allergic to the chemicals found in shampoo, conditioner, and other hair care products? Many people are! If you ever step out of the shower and have red, blotchy skin all over your face, then you’ve got an allergy to your hair care products!

What can you do? First of all, you need to find out what exactly it is that you’re allergic to. This means going to your doctor and having an allergy test done. This test involves placing small amounts of different chemicals on your skin to seeing if you have a reaction. It might sound like a horrible test to have done, and it can be, but the information you learn from it is very important. Once you know what it is you’re allergic to, especially if you have a severe reaction, you’ll be able to avoid that chemical.

However, it’s important to also know that allergies can develop over time. If your hairstylist uses a product that you’ve used many times before, it’s possible you can have a sudden reaction to it. It may itch, burn, cause you to break out in hives, or make your skin crack and peel. It will be worse in the areas where the product was directly applied, but if you touch that area and then touch somewhere else, you can spread the allergens all around, causing reactions in multiple parts of your body.

What can you do? One way of limiting these reactions is to thoroughly wash your entire body to get rid of any allergens that are still on you. Then you can try taking an over the counter antihistamine. This will usually help deal with mild allergic reactions. You can also use cortisone ointment or calamine lotion to help with the areas of your skin that have been affected.
