Are you Wearing the Right Makeup?
4/1/2015

When women are asked if they’re wearing the right makeup, many think about the colors they’ve chosen or if they’re using too much makeup. However, that’s not what this question is always about. Sometimes, it’s a question of whether or not the ingredients in your makeup are irritating your skin. If you often see red splotches or have itchy skin after wearing certain types of makeup, it probably means that you’re allergic to one of the ingredients.

There are more symptoms than just red, itchy skin. Other signs of makeup allergies can include small red bumps, rash, dry patches of skin on your face, and even pain.

Makeup allergies come in two different types. The first occurs when your skin comes into contact with something that induces an allergic reaction. This is the more common type of makeup allergy and can occur in anyone. It may not always happen when you wear makeup, either—you can be allergic to some makeup ingredients but not others. This type of reaction is called irritant contact dermatitis.

The second type of allergy is called allergic contact dermatitis. It’s more severe than irritant contact dermatitis. Signs of this type of allergy include breakouts, swelling, itching, and even difficulty breathing or other issues. This type of allergy can occur even if you use just a small amount of the makeup.

So how can you decide which makeup products to buy? One thing to do is visit your dermatologist. They will do an allergy patch test to determine what, if anything, you have allergic reactions to. Then, once you know the ingredients that you need to avoid, it’s easy enough to find products that don’t contain them. Note that products labeled as hypoallergenic aren’t necessarily going to be better for you—the FDA does not really regulate the ingredients, and there are many products with this label that you can still be allergic to.
