Choosing Nontoxic Beauty Products to Safeguard Health
1/29/2015

Legally, the term cosmetics refer to beauty supplies or beauty products that people use and apply, but are not considered drugs or medications of any sort. The most common cosmetics include shampoos, conditioners, hair colors, lotions, deodorant, nail polish, lipstick, and makeup. A recent study indicated that an average adult makes use of at least 9 cosmetic products on a day-to-day basis. In the United States, these products are regulated quite loosely, and consumers frequently consider the ingredients or contents, which could be hazardous to health without moderate regulation.

Hair Coloring Products

Among the most commonly-used beauty products include hair coloring supplies. In fact, these products are a few of those hazardous cosmetics. Compared to permanent dyes, temporary dyes could pose lesser risks, because permanent hair coloring products often contain a combination of potent chemicals that could cause irritation to the eyes, skin, or even the respiratory system. The most serious, possible health effect of hair coloring products is cancer due to extreme toxic chemical contents.

Fragrances

Scented products such as after-shave lotions, colognes, perfumes, and body sprays contain volatile chemicals. Although the smell is pleasant and alluring, some products may have adverse reactions towards one’s health. Most fragrances have highly secretive contents, but could be a myriad of toxic chemicals, which are called phthalates. These substances are responsible for health issues while using excessive fragrance products.

Nail Polish and Nail Polish Remover

Nail polish and nail polish remover are beauty products commonly used in beauty salons. These are solvent-based paint, thus, the nail polish remover is somewhat like paint remover. Both products are highly flammable, and could also contain phthalates. Overexposure to these products is harmful to health, and leftover items are classified as hazardous waste.

Antiperspirant/Deodorant

Antiperspirant and deodorant products are also considered as cosmetics. Many of these products also contain health-hazard phthalates. The same is true when it comes to aerosol deodorants as these products are highly flammable and pressurized.

Makeup Products

Finally, makeup products usually involve various powders and paints, thus, are too diverse to discuss every concoction of it. These cosmetics contain artificial colors that are coal-tar pigments, which simply means health-hazards. Over and above, it is always important to read on product labels or consult with a professional prior to any use of beauty products.
