These massages are done in different ways or have different benefits. Here are a few of the most common types of massages you’ll find at a spa.

The Swedish massage is the most common, and it’s what people think of when someone talks about getting a massage. The masseuse uses their hands and elbows to rub, stroke, knead, and roll the muscles as needed to help reduce cramping, help tense muscles relax, and generally help a person relax.

Another common type of massage is a hot stone massage. In this type of massage, the masseuse first places warm stones on the body. They may then use another set of warm stones to rub up and down the muscles. This type of massage is very relaxing, but it can also help those with very tense muscles because the heat helps promote blood circulation and relaxation.

A deep tissue massage is often used as part of physical therapy. This massage is usually focused on a muscle or group of muscles that are knotted up and very tense. It’s definitely not very relaxing—often, in fact, a deep tissue massage actually hurts a lot at first. However, as the masseuse works the knots out of the muscles, it stops hurting. At the end of the session, you may even be pain-free.

Finally, some spas may offer exotic-sounding massages like the Shiatsu massage. This Japanese technique uses finger pressure to hit specific pressure points. While some people find this relaxing, others may not. According to Japanese tradition, a Shiatsu massage will help correct the flow of energy throughout your body, bringing it into perfect harmony.
