Finding a Good Makeup Artist
1/28/2015

A makeup artist is in charge of doing all of the hair, makeup, and styling for people in movies, television, commercials, and theater productions. The role of a makeup artist is fairly specialized, so you won’t find a lot of them in some locations. As you might expect, most of them work in places like Los Angeles and New York—places where a lot of different television and movies are filmed or theater productions held. But there’s probably a makeup artist near you if you look hard enough.

Checking online is a great first step since most makeup artists, especially those who work freelance, have websites. While you may find someone local, chances are you may not if you’re not in a large city. You may need to provide the artist’s transportation and pay for their lodging to bring them out to your production. If you’re doing an advertising shot, a fashion show, or a one-day shot on a movie, that won’t be too expensive. If you’re looking for a makeup artist for a theater production that will run for several weeks, you may want to continue searching for someone local.

Beauty schools will often work with different groups in need of makeup artists. The students will do the work for free just to get the experience. If you’re near a college campus, you can contact their theater department to see who does their makeup. The university may have a makeup artist on staff who is willing to work with you on your project, or they may have students who would be willing to do it.

Remember, of course, that you don’t want to simply find a makeup artist—you need to find a good makeup artist. Be sure to ask to look at their portfolio before you hire them to make sure they do the type of work you want.
