Getting a Chair Massage
2/19/2015

One of the things you’ll often see at the mall and occasionally at different events is a massage area. These areas usually have really interesting chairs for people to sit in while they’re getting their back rubbed. Chair massages are done by trained masseuses, so there’s no worry about a random person giving you a massage. However, they do differ in a number of ways from regular massages you'd get at a day spa.

The obvious difference is that you’re sitting in a chair instead of lying down. This means that the masseuse can’t really work on your legs or feet. Most chair massages are back and neck massages only, which can be great for those who need a quick session to get some of the tension out of their neck, back, and shoulders.

Because they’re done out in the middle of a mall aisle or other public area, these massages are given through clothing. There are no oils or other lotions used, nor are there hot stones or other types of heat applied. That doesn’t mean they don’t feel good, but it does mean that they’re not going to take care of really deep problematic muscle pains.

They’re also fairly quick. Sometimes you pay per minute or per block--$10 for 10 minutes, for example. You can keep paying, of course, but after about ten minutes, most people have gotten all of the benefit they can get from one of these massages.

The benefit of a chair massage is that it’s a quick and cheap way of getting a professional back rub. For those with pulled muscles or who feel stiff and sore from work, that’s all they really need. The downside is that it’s not a full body massage, and there’s no soothing music or dimly lit room for you to relax in. Many people are distracted by others walking by or are uncomfortable getting a massage in public.
