Getting a Professional Deep Tissue Massage
3/31/2015

If you find yourself sore and tense more often than not, you might need a really good deep tissue massage. If you go to a day spa, you’ll find that the professionals there know exactly how to deal with all of the knots and kinks you have in your back.

A deep tissue massage is definitely different than the Swedish massage, which is done with fairly gentle strokes, or a Shiatsu massage, which deals more with pressure points. While deep tissue massages may use sweeping strokes or pressure points, it has more to do with getting down into the tissues and deep layers of muscle. Massage therapists who perform deep tissue massages will press down fairly hard with their fingers, palms, knuckles, and elbows to really work out all of those knots and get your muscles and tissues back into a proper alignment.

One of the most important parts of a deep tissue massage is knowing when the pain is good and when it’s too much. If you’ve never had a deep tissue massage before, you may not be able to really tell when the pain is the knot being worked out and when it’s the therapist pressing too hard or on an area they shouldn’t. Don’t be afraid to tell them when the pain seems like it’s too much. They will pull back and go easier on you.

When should you get a deep tissue massage? If you feel really stressed out of if you’ve had an injury that affects the muscles, a deep tissue massage can feel really good. Professional athletes often get them because their muscles stiffen up and feel sore after games or intense workouts. These massages can actually prevent you from injuring yourself further, plus they can prevent the formation of scar tissue, too. All in all, it’s a good idea to get a deep tissue massage if you’re feeling really sore and in pain.
