Getting Laser Skin Resurfacing
3/14/2015

Laser skin surgery uses a laser to remove defective tissues or treat bleeding blood vessels. This procedure is also used to erase birthmarks, tattoos, sun spots, and wrinkles. There are a number of different types of lasers used. Some are very small, while others cover a large area. They heat the cells until they burst, eliminating them. The different laser types include pulsed dye laser, carbon dioxide laser, yttrium aluminum garnet, and KTP laser. While they all get the same results, the way they work is a little different.

Laser skin resurfacing will make your skin look younger and reduce wrinkles, blotches, scars, and other unwanted lines. These issues may be caused by excessive exposure to the sun, acne, or the aging process. This procedure is precise, removing the skin layer by layer. It’s quick, easy, and even relatively painless.

Skin resurfacing is usually done as an outpatient procedure. A dermatologist or a plastic surgeon will handle the procedure. They may treat your wrinkles and other blemishes one at a time, or they may work on your entire face. At times, the doctor will have to inject a local anesthetic to numb the burning. A general anesthesia may be used if they’re doing your entire face. The treatment will take between 45 minutes to two hours, depending on the area or size being treated.

After the treatment, you may experience swelling in your face. Your doctor will normally prescribe steroids in managing the swelling. An itching or stinging feeling is also typical after the procedure. You may experience some dry skin and peeling five to seven days after the treatment. The healing process after a laser skin resurfacing treatment usually takes ten to 21 days, but you can return to work and your other normal activities at once. You’ll just need to keep out of the sun.
