Going to a Professional for a Massage
1/20/2015

There are a lot of people who are good at giving back rubs. You might be one of them. Because of this, many people think they can give a good deep tissue massage at home after watching a video online or reading a book. However, there’s actually a pretty big difference between a back rub and a true massage.

Trained masseuses have to learn more than just how to rub someone’s back. They actually study anatomy and how muscles work. They learn about bone structure, how parts of the body are interconnected, and more. Learning how to actually give a massage is one of the easier parts of their training. Also, trained masseuses work under the direction of a licensed massage therapist at first so that they learn exactly where to press and rub. By the time they start giving massages on their own, they’ve had hours of practice!

An amateur, on the other hand, probably has very little knowledge of where the bones and muscles are in someone’s back. They may actually end up causing more pain than they cure because of this. One of the biggest mistakes someone might make is to rub down or across the spine. This can cause a lot of pain, especially if a good amount of pressure is being used.

Then there’s the issue of oils. An amateur will probably grab whatever can be found at the local drug store, while a professional will have access to many different kinds of massage oils. Some of these may not be widely available. They’ll also know exactly how to heat the oil and how much should be used. All of this is very important in giving a really good massage.

Of course, there’s more to a massage than just a back rub. Hand, foot, and leg massages are also wonderful, but they’re even harder to master. If you’re tired of bad massages, book a day spa massage and see just what you’ve been missing.
