Home Hair Care Tips from a Stylist

Recreating the perfect look that your hairstylist spent an hour or so crafting can be difficult. Part of this is that you may not have access to the same products or tools that the stylist has, but that can be pretty easily fixed. What can’t be easily fixed is having the skill of a stylist. But fortunately, these tips from actual stylists can help.

• Buy the products they used. Yes, many stylists will be the first to say that the products they use aren’t the cheapest on the market. But there’s a reason for that—they’re very good products that have been tried and tested over the years. Many stylists have gone through a number of different brands and settled on the ones they use because they’re the best.

• Use shampoo and conditioner. Some people skip conditioner, but it’s very important to the health of your hair. Conditioner helps redistribute the moisture and oils in the hair, preventing hair strands from becoming brittle. If you’re not going to use conditioner, at least use a two-in-one shampoo and conditioner product.

• Ask your stylist for recommendations on brushes, combs, and other items. Despite what it may look like, not all brushes are created equally. A metal brush will conduct heat differently than a plastic brush, for example, while a wider brush may be better for those with thick hair.

• You don’t need to wash your hair every day. This leads to it drying out, especially if you don’t condition it. Instead, ask your stylist to evaluate your hair. Because every person’s hair is different, some may need to wash it more or less than others.

• Don’t rush it. When a stylist tells you that you’ll need to spend some time on your hair every morning, then you really will. Some cuts are ready to go as soon as you roll out of bed, but some need work. If you’re going with one of the latter, be prepared to put in that work every day.
