How Sugar Affects your Skin
4/2/2015

You know how sugar affects your body—it’s bad for it! That’s probably why it tastes so good. However, did you know that sugar can greatly affect your skin and how you look? Many people who dislike how their skin looks probably eat more sugar than they think they do. Here are a few of the ways sugar can affect your skin.

It can cause inflammation. In fact, eating sugar actually triggers the body’s inflammation response. This includes the skin. You may start to feel flushed and warm after eating dessert or a fairly rich meal. This is because the skin is actually becoming slightly inflamed. Over time, the little blood vessels in the skin will actually dilate permanently, which leads to discoloration. The skin might also start to feel somewhat coarse. Once this happens, there’s not much you can do to reverse it. Even the experts at a day spa may not be able to do much for you.

Eating a lot of sugar can also increase your body’s insulin resistance. While this can cause a host of different health issues, it can also make your skin look different. Small spots of dark skin can appear on your neck and on other areas of your body. You may find that you actually grow more body hair, too.

In order to combat these horrible things, many people simply cut out sugar from their diet. However, that’s a lot easier said than done. Putting aside the cookies, candy, and soda is definitely a step in the right direction. Those things are full of sugar, and they have very few redeeming qualities. However, did you know that a lot of fruit is high in sugar? Yes, it’s natural sugar, but it still affects the body in many of the same ways as refined sugars. You also need to look at the different foods you’re buying in the supermarket. Some of these foods have a lot of sugar added to them.
