Keeping Your Hair Protected from the Sun
3/27/2015

Summer will be here before you know it, and that means it’s time to think about protecting your skin and hair from the bright summer sun. A hairstylist will tell you that it’s important to protect your skin and hair from the sun, but there are a number of other factors that you’ll face during the summer months. Sand from the beach, chlorine from the pool, and even salt from swimming in the ocean can all damage your hair. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you’re going to be outdoors a lot this spring and summer, especially if you go swimming.

Before you get in the pool or wade out in the lake or ocean, go ahead and rinse your hair out with regular water. This is why most public pools have showers available before you actually get into the chlorine-treated waters. Dry hair will absorb any water it comes into contact with, so if your hair is dry before you get into the pool, it will absorb that water, chlorine and all. In the ocean, it will absorb the salt water. Both of these can result in damaged hair. Getting your hair damp before you swim will actually help protect it.

After being out in the sun and swimming, you’ll want to use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. The salt and chlorine can cause your hair to dry out, so you will need to be sure to add some moisture back to it. A moisturizing hair masque is an even better way of doing this. It will moisturize plus make your hair look shiny and luxurious.

When you’re not in the pool, remember to wear a hat outdoors. This is important for a few reasons. If your hair is color treated, it will help keep it from fading. Wearing a hat will also keep the top of your head from getting sunburnt, plus it will help shade your face and neck.
