Salon Etiquette
1/23/2015

While you won’t really find them posted anywhere, there are some unofficial rules of salon etiquette that everyone needs to follow. Your hairstylist will be very appreciative if you do, and while you won’t get kicked out if you break one of these rules, realize that you are inconveniencing your stylist and other customers. Here are a few rules of salon etiquette that everyone should follow:

Don’t be late. This is probably the biggest rule, and in some cases, it is a written one. Some salons will cancel your appointment if you’re more than about 10 minutes late and don’t call. Even if they don’t, remember that being late is going to cause the stylist to have to either rush your hair or push back their next appointment. If possible, give your stylist at least 24-hours’ notice if you won’t be able to make it.

Don’t come to your appointment sick. Your stylist doesn’t want to get whatever illness you have, and neither do customers who come after you. If you’re coughing and sneezing all over, the stylist may need to disinfect their entire workstation before they can let someone else sit there. If you’re contagious, definitely stay home.

Don’t bring your kids, especially if they’re going to run around the salon or make a lot of noise the entire time. This interrupts the other stylists and may turn what should be a relaxing time for other customers into a headache-inducing hour.

Put down the phones, tablets, and magazines. This isn’t just because the stylist wants to chat—they usually don’t care if you zone out or even fall into a light sleep. What they do care about is that your head is in the right position for them to work on your hair. If you’re hunched over a magazine or cell phone, it may be hard for them to work on your hair.

So give your stylist and everyone else a break—follow these simple rules of etiquette when you head to the salon.
