Salons are Going Green
1/22/2015

Many businesses are going green to attract the environmentally-conscious consumer, and that includes hair salons. Hairstylists in the past have used bleach and other dyes and chemicals that haven’t always been the most environmental. Many included chemicals that included ammonia and burned when they were put on the scalp. But new organic products no longer have such a smell or cause any kinds of pain
.
People may be surprised to have their hair colored and not feel that usual burning sensation they’re so used to, but these organic solutions are just as powerful as the chemical ones they’re replacing.

Many people assume that the chemicals being used on them at their hair salon are safe and have been approved by some organization, but that’s actually not true. Because of the way the Toxic Control Substance Act was written, the FDA actually can’t require the manufacturers to test their products for safety concerns. That means the hair spray, straighteners, dyes, nail polish, and other products that customers and hairstylists are around all day can contain dangerous toxins. Who knows what they’re doing to your body!

Did you know that body and hair care products can actually avoid listing all of their ingredients? If something is considered a part of what gives the product its distinctive scent, it doesn’t have to be listed—the way a company makes its product’s fragrance is considered to be proprietary information and doesn’t have to be released. This is where a lot of those toxic chemicals are hidden.

Organic products have no chemicals in them. They often feel better on the skin and hair, and they smell much better, too. A green salon works to ensure that all of their products have as few chemicals in them as possible. While it may not be possible to go completely organic, they will do their best to make certain you’re not being exposed to a ton of chemicals.
