Should You Try Coloring Your Own Hair?
2/27/2015

Many people love to color their hair. Some even change their hair color every few months. They’ll go through all of the natural hair colors—black, brown, red, blonde—and then move on to crazy colors like blue and green. They might even get their hairstylist to give them stripes of different colors. But the cost of having your hair dyed, especially if you’re doing a dramatic change or want multiple colors, can add up. Some people, then, prefer to color their own hair.

But is that really the best idea? Your hairstylist would say no, and it’s not just because they want the money. Hair dye is a very complicated thing. The chemicals in it can easily burn your scalp, turn your hair a very odd color, or even cause an allergic reaction. That’s why this task is often best left to the experts.

For example, if you have blonde hair and want to dye it a wild blue for Halloween or just so you stand out, you might grab some blue dye and think you’re good…until you look in the mirror and see that you now have green hair. That’s because some blue dyes don’t work with blonde hair. Some black dyes don’t, either, because they’re actually done with a blue base.

Trying to get sections of your hair dyed evenly can also be very difficult. It’s much easier for someone else to work on your hair because they can see it from all sides and angles—they’re not trying to use a mirror to see the back. They will be able to make your hair coloring much more even and make certain that no spots are missed.

So if you’re going to try coloring your own hair, do so at your own risk—you never know how it’s going to turn out. If you want to be certain you look amazing, have your stylist do it.
