Spas and Psoriasis
1/2/2015

Psoriasis is a skin condition in which a person develops itchy, scaly patches of skin on their body. These skin lesions are often more embarrassing than they are medically troubling, although psoriasis can affect the organs and may put the individual at risk of some cancers and other diseases. No one is completely certain what causes psoriasis, but research does support the idea that it’s genetic and often triggered by different environmental factors.

If you deal with psoriasis, you know how horrible it can be to have itchy skin that looks bad. You also know how hard it is to control—for some, certain creams work great, but for others, they don’t. Fortunately, there is a natural alternative: the spa.

During the 1990s, Dead Sea salt scrubs became very popular. They sounded very exotic, and they were often fairly expensive, too, because the salts needed had to be imported from the Dead Sea area. The waters of this sea are full of salt—the Dead Sea has ten times more salt in it than any ocean. People have made trips to the Dead Sea to bathe in its waters for centuries. The waters truly do help with many conditions, including psoriasis.

Today, Dead Sea salt baths have been combined with the use of a narrow-band ultraviolet light to create a very different type of treatment for psoriasis. This treatment is called baleno-phototherapy, and it has been proven to work. It doesn’t actually use salt water from the Dead Sea, which makes it much more affordable. Instead, the treatment recreates the special conditions found at the Dead Sea using a brine bath and the special ultraviolet light. The salt water helps the skin soften and breaks up the thick layers of skin psoriasis is known for.

If you’ve had issues with psoriasis, you may want to look into a spa that offers this treatment.
