The Full Benefits of a Steam Room

If you have never been to a spa's steam room, you may not know what you’re missing. A steam room is a small room that is filled with hot steam—generally, the room is about 40 degrees Celsius or hotter. This increases the humidity in the room, making people sweat more. There are a number of benefits to this.

By increasing the body’s temperature and inducing a relaxing state, a steam room makes a person’s blood circulate more quickly. It also increases lymphatic circulation. This helps the body remove waste and toxins more quickly via the sweat glands. It also increases a person’s metabolism, so they digest food more quickly and burn off more calories.

For those with high blood pressure, a visit to a steam room can help lower it by anywhere from 10 to 15 percent. While this is just a temporary fix, it can give the body a bit of a respite from the stress it’s often under.

A steam room is also great for a person’s skin. The steam makes the sudoriferous glands, more commonly called the sweat glands, open up and release more sweat. In addition to helping remove toxins, this and the moisture in the air also help to soften up the skin. It will help slough off dead skin, leaving the face and skin looking healthy and fresh.

Those who are tense or are dealing with muscle pains may also greatly benefit from a few sessions in a steam room. The warm air helps the body relax. The blood flow to the muscles is increased, helping them to release tension.

While some people may not enjoy sitting in a steam room, others find that they feel invigorated and refreshed after spending time in these hot, humid rooms. Others find that the dry heat of a sauna is much more to their liking.
