Tipping Your Hairstylist
1/23/2015

Most people consider it good etiquette to tip their hairstylist. Now, others may argue that stylists charge a good amount for their services and tips shouldn’t be necessary, but those people are definitely in the minority. Most people tip because they feel like their hairstylist does more than just fix their hair—they listen, the give advice, they go out of their way to make us look great…they’re not exactly a friend, but they’re more than just a random person providing a service.

But how much do you tip? That’s a good question. According to some informal polls, The rate can be anywhere from between 10 and 25 percent, although many women tend to tip about 20 percent overall. The percentage is often higher in larger cities and at fancier salons. Smaller town stylists often get tipped about 15 percent. The tip amount also seems to depend on how often a person gets their hair done. Someone who gets a monthly color may not tip quite as much because they spend a lot of money on their hair.

Here’s a basic formula for determining how much to tip. Start at the average 20 percent. Then add more if you’re late, if you get worked into the schedule at the last minute, or if you have a child with you who needs to be corralled.

If you feel like you’re being rushed through the process, have to wait on the stylist when you arrived on time, or aren’t happy with the overall job your stylist does, you may drop the tip a bit, but you shouldn’t do less than 10 percent unless you’re never returning to that stylist again. Remember, a stylist isn’t like a waiter—you’ll be seeing this person on a regular basis, so if you want great service, be sure to tip nicely.
