Washing Your Hair – More Tips from the Pros 3/6/2015
If you’ve read our first post on washing your hair, you may have learned a number of little things that have made your hair stronger, shinier, and more luxurious feeling. But those tips were just the beginning. Here are some more tips from hairstylists.
Always remember to be gentle with your hair. Don’t pull on tangles or yank your hair around. When your hair is wet, it’s also at its weakest. That’s why you should be careful about brushing it. Use a comb right after you get out of the shower, but don’t brush your hair until it’s dried.
You should always lather your shampoo from the roots out. This helps to increase the flow of blood to your scape and can help promote growth. When lathering, always use straight motions—if you move your hands in circles, you may cause tangles.
However, while you want to shampoo from your roots, you don’t want to condition from them. Putting conditioner on your scalp can clog up your pores because most of your hair’s natural oils are concentrated at the scalp. Instead, start working conditioner into your hair at about the midway point. Then leave it in your hair for a few minutes.
Be sure you use shampoo and conditioner that have been designed for your specific hair type. Products for dry hair, for example, contain extra moisturizing ingredients, while those that are designed for color-treated hair will help keep the color bright and vivid longer.
You probably love taking fairly warm showers. After all, who wants to stand under a stream of cold water? However, hot water won’t actually close up your hair cuticles. Instead, you want to do a rinse with cold water. This causes the hair cuticles to tighten up, which seals in the shiny outer layer. Your hair will look much glossier if you do.
