A woman gets laser hair removalDo you find yourself hating some of your body hairs? A lot of people shave, wax, and pluck hairs on a regular basis, but what if you didn’t have to do that? Laser hair removal is a relatively new treatment that can remove unwanted hair permanently. It is still somewhat expensive, but there are more and more salons and even day spas offering this procedure. In fact, as of 2014, it’s the fastest growing cosmetic treatment in the country.

How does it work? A specialist aims a laser at the area. This laser fires a pulsating beam of light onto the skin that actually destroys the hair follicle, ensuring that no hair will grow in that area. Because it does fully destroy the follicle, people have to be certain they truly want to remove all hair in the area.

Once you do decide to have this treatment, you’ll meet with the specialist to learn what to expect and to get any questions you might have answered. You’ll need to stop waxing and plucking the area for several weeks so that the hair follicles can easily be targeted. However, you can still shave. In fact, shaving can help make the treatment more effective.

Some people may need several treatments on the same area to fully destroy all hair follicles, but once the treatments are finished, they won’t need to worry about hair growing there again. Those who want to have most of their body hair removed this way will need to have a number of sessions because the treatment is generally only done in one part of the body at a time.

Laser hair remove usually isn’t that painful. In most cases, the specialist will rub a topical anesthetic or cooling gel on the area to reduce the feeling of heat. Some patients do report feeling a little bit of pain as the follicles are destroyed, while others say it’s merely an unpleasant sensation.
